Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

This module comprises lectures and seminars that include exercises and student contributions. On the basis of theories of international relations and sustainable development, the module focuses on international relations and sustainable development in the Arctic in a period of history when global players such as nation-states, supranational entities and multinational companies are increasingly interested in Arctic conditions and are investing resources in the region.

Knowledge

  • relevant theories concerning the Arctic in the global world
  • themes and trends in the study of the Arctic in the global world and various approaches to the study of these.

Skills

  • critically assessing, selecting and applying relevant theories and methods to the study of the Arctic in the global world
  • reflecting on a chosen topic and the methodology for its analysis.

Competences

  • analysis of complex problems in a way that is independent and methodologically sound
  • academically reflecting on a scientific basis and assuming responsibility for personal academic development.

Exam

Prerequisite for enrollment for the exam

  • It is a prerequisite for taking the exam, that the student has submitted an individual reflection portfolio, from which the examiner selects one topic in advance of the exam, by the deadline set by the instructor.

Oral exam
An internal examination in: The Arctic in the Age of Globalization. The examination is completed by:

• a short presentation on the topic chosen by the examiner from the individual reflection portfolio submitted in advance of the exam. The presentation can be done in a manner of the student’s own choice (e.g. oral, poster-, video- or slides-based)

• a discussion with the examiners on the basis of the student’s presentation.
Duration of examination: 30 minutes per student, including max. 10 minutes for the student’s presentation.
