Process Design and Simulation

2026/2027

Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

This course focuses on the systematic design, simulation, and integration and evaluation of chemical processes from a Process Systems Engineering (PSE) perspective. The students will develop skills in steady-state process simulation, process synthesis, heat integration, techno-economic evaluation and life cycle analysis of chemical processes.

Learning objectives

Knowledge

Students who complete the module must be able to

  • account for  principles of systematic process design, including process simulation, synthesis, integration, and evaluation.
  • explain the theoretical and computational basis of steady-state process simulation.Explain the theoretical and computational basis of steady-state process simulation.
  • describe and critically assess the functionalities of major commercial process simulators (e.g., Aspen Plus, Aspen Energy Analyzer).

Skills

  • illustrate industrial and laboratory scale research processes through Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs)convert a PFD into a robust process model in simulation software
  • perform rigorous process mass and energy balances for complex processes
  • perform steady-state simulation and evaluate results
  • apply sensitivity analysis, case studies, and optimization techniques to improve process performance.Utilize computer-aided tools for process design, integration and debottlenecking

Competences

  • independently investigate and solve chemical process design and simulation problems using appropriate modelling and optimization tools. Critically assess the influence of thermodynamics, kinetics, and operating conditions on process performance.
