Process Control and Safety

2026/2027

Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

The module introduces the concepts of process control and the application of sensors and controllers to maintain steady operation in a chemical or biological process. This includes understanding tools for assessment of process safety and relevant standards and good engineering practices.

Learning objectives

Knowledge

Students who have passed the module should be able to

  • Explain process and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID)
  • Explain the basic principles of control such as pressure, temperature and levels.
  • Account for the elements of a PID controller
  • Account for the principles of control and safety systems
  • Account for common tools in safety analysis
  • Response time analysis and safety times
  • Account for the functionality and use of typical sensors
  • Account for applicable standards and good engineering practice

Skills

  • Represent a process in a process and instrumetation diagram (P&ID)
  • Dimension basic control elements and safety systems
  • Manual tune a PID controller
  • Apply control practice to achieve process performance criteria
