Recommended prerequisite for participation in the module

The module builds on knowledge obtained in Calculus, Reactor and process modelling and chemical unit operations.

Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

The module will introduce the students to process design, including instrumentation and economy, and process control.

The course includes preparation of a mini project addressing the learning objectives

Learning objectives

Knowledge

Students completing the course must be able to:

  • explain process design
  • explain instrumentation
  • explain process control
  • describe PID design and tuning

Skills

Students must be able to:

  • represent systems in block diagrams
  • formulate differential equations to simulate system dynamics and predict responses
  • linearize nonlinear systems of differential equations
  • solve linear differential equations using the Laplace transform
  • specify relevant control constants for simple control systems
  • design and dimension processes, including selecting relevant instruments (pumps, valves, pipes) with considerations on the physical and chemical resistance of the instruments
  • develop detailed process diagrams
  • perform basic process design and economic calculations
