The purpose of this elective course is for students to gain a broad understanding of the field of social psychology, allowing them to apply various social psychological theories to current issues, particularly related to human’s social relationships and groups, identity and sensemaking. Throughout the course, students will develop the ability to reflect on these social psychological theories and apply them to concrete social psychological problems.
In social psychology, we describe how people’s social relationships and interactions form the basis for identity creation, everyday life, and society. Social psychology lies at the intersection of sociology and psychology, and this elective course draws from both fields. Social psychology contributes to sociology by equipping sociologists with a better understanding of what occurs in social life at the micro-level. The boundaries and the theorists included in the field of social psychology vary depending on whether it is sociologically or psychologically oriented. This elective course will introduce key themes and issues within social psychology, with a primary focus on sociological elements of social psychology. The lecture series will delve into core areas such as identity formation, exploring various theories of identity, socialization, cognition, learning, social norms, and group processes.
The module is a theoretical course module delivered as a series of lectures and exercises.
