The aim of the course is to provide students with basic knowledge of core demographic concepts and methods, as well as of demographic processes. The course aims to enable students to apply demographic methods to describe and uncover fundamental population processes, including the demographic components of fertility, mortality, and migration, and the resulting population structure in terms of e.g. age distribution and urbanization.
An essential purpose is for students to assess the diversity of demographic measurements and use demographic data sources and analysis methods correctly. It is also the goal that students can convey knowledge about basic dynamics and trends.
Additionally, students should be able to reflect on demographic theories and recognize the relevance of demographic knowledge in the context of analyses of various societal phenomena and processes. Furthermore, students should understand the importance of and critically apply interdisciplinary knowledge from fields such as history, epidemiology, and sociology, which can contribute with insights for understanding and analysing demographic developments.
