The goal is to provide students with insight into current issues, theories, and research related to consumption, lifestyle, and media, as well as tools for reflecting on connections between consumption, lifestyle, and media on one hand, and topics such as identity formation, social differences, and processes of change in contemporary societies on the other.
The growth in consumption options and media offerings is among the factors that highlight the sociological study of consumption, lifestyle, and media. The questions raised in the course include: What forms of consumption and lifestyle expressions can be identified within various practice areas (such as food, fashion, literature, film, or technology)? What do consumption, lifestyle, and media mean for how we understand ourselves and others in today’s society? Is the growth in media and consumption offerings an expression of liberation or discipline for the individual? Are new forms of identity, needs, understandings, conflicts, etc., emerging?
