Fuel Cells, Hydrogen Technology and Power-to-X

2025/2026

Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

The module is based on knowledge achieved when studying the 2nd semester on the Master of Science in Energy Engineering, Sustainable Energy Engineering or similar.

Learning objectives

Knowledge

  • Have knowledge about the components that make up an electrochemical cell
  • Understand the thermodynamics of fuel cells and electrolysers
  • Understand the relations governing the kinetics of electrochemical reactions
  • Understand the mechanisms governing charge, mass and energy transport within electrodes and electrolytes
  • Understand how the individual processes are coupled
  • Understand system integration in PtX systems

Skills

  • Understand the differences in the various types of fuel cells and electrolyzers, and be able to decide where they are applied
  • Be able to dimension a fuel cell or electrolyzer according to the specified power input and output
  • Be able to model the performance of an individual fuel cell or electrolyzer

Competences

  • Independently be able to analyse and model real electrochemical cells
  • Independently be able to identify the validity or limitations of an electrochemical model
  • Independently be able simplify an electrochemical model so it is applicable in modelling of thermal or electrical systems

Type of instruction

The course is taught by a mixture of lectures, workshops, exercises and self‐ studies, including e-learning activities.

Extent and expected workload

Since it is a 5 ECTS course module, the work load is expected to be 150 hours for the student.
