Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

The module contains the theoretical and methodical basis of visual and digital communication, visual culture and art education. The main component is theoretical and methodical where the student works independently with a current problem within the scientific field. The purpose is to provide in-depth knowledge of and to discuss a theoretical research question. The student’s work materialises in a scientific paper (15 pages) that formulates the scientific objective, the theoretical framework, the methodology and the scientific contribution.  

Learning objectives

Knowledge

Through the module, the student must gain knowledge and understanding of:

  • Advanced theories and methods in art education and digital visual communication pertaining to the chosen topic of their research project
  • Scientific basis of their research practice and its critical reflection

Skills

The student must through the module acquire skills in:  

  • Using advanced theories and/or methodological frameworks to form, analyse, and discuss novel research problems for digital visual communication and art education
  • Discussing and communicating about theoretical issues connected to the programme in the format of a research paper

Competences

The student must through the module acquire competences for:

  • Independently to initiate disciplinary work that requires novel solutions
  • Conducting independent academic research practice
  • Contributing to the academic discussion in the fields of art education and digital visual communication

Oral exam based on a project
The examination is a conversation between the student(s) and the examiner based on a project report produced individually or in a group. The project report/written work will be considered the shared responsibility of the group. Students will be examined and assessed on the basis of the entire project report, and one combined grade will be awarded each student for the project report and the oral performance.
