Bioresource utilization and sustainable biobased transition

2025/2026

Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

The module focuses on utilisation of bioresources in biobased transition and life cycle analysis of biomass production and consumption.

Learning objectives

Knowledge

Students who have passed the module should be able to

  • provide an overview of accessibility and sustainability related to different biomass sources including terrestrial, marine and fresh water
  • compare different food production systems in relation to sustainable transition
  • compare and discuss environmental challenges related to food production
  • account for future challenges for ecosystems in a bioresource transition context
  • describe theories and methods for life cycle assessment and how they can be used to support decision making towards sustainable production and consumption

Skills

  • quantitively compare environmental challenges across terrestrial, marine and fresh water ecosystems in a sustainable context.
  • perform at a basic level the four phases of a life cycle assessment for a product: define goal and scope, compile a life cycle inventory, perform impact assessment, and interpret results.

Competences

  • evaluate and discuss environmental consequences of future bioresource utilization and biomass production systems (food)
  • evaluate and discuss future bioresource production and utilization, hereunder food production systems, in relation to sustainable transition
  • evaluate bioresource utilization in relation to sustainable transition
  • apply LCA in the assessment of biobased products and technologies to support decisions in a life cycle perspective.
