The course aims to provide the student with knowledge of Design Thinking and Systems Thinking. The student will learn to reason about design practices and how these practices contribute to the development of interactive systems that address complex problems. The student will also learn to reason about the parts and the whole of different types of systems, where interaction design plays a central role

Learning objectives

Knowledge

The student must acquire knowledge of:

  • Design Thinking in the work with various forms of digital products and processes,
  • Systems Thinking as a fundamental framework for the development and application of interactive digital solutions,
  • Differences and synergies between Design Thinking and Systems Thinking in an interaction designer’s practice,
  • Current research in interaction design that employs Design Thinking and/or Systems Thinking.

Skills

The student must be able to accurately explain and use correct terminology for both Design Thinking and Systems Thinking, and thereby:

  • Be able to distinguish between and compare them,
  • Apply their respective methods and techniques in professional design practice,
  • Reflect on their own design processes and products

Competences

The student must be able to select, justify, and apply:

  • methods and techniques from Design Thinking and Systems Thinking in their own design contexts

Type of instruction

The type of instruction is organised in accordance with the general instruction methods of the programme, cf. § 17.

Extent and expected workload
