Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

The elective develops students’ capacity to analyse the dynamics at work in intercultural encounters. Intercultural relations are explored holistically, with a consideration of how the combination of factors such as setting, people, language, affect and cognition impact actors’ ability to act and interact with people perceived as ‘different’.
Part of the course will consist of casework, encouraging participants to apply theoretical and practical knowledge on real-life examples.

The module comprises a course and an individual portfolio.

Learning objectives

Knowledge

The student must attain

Knowledge and understanding of:

  • theories inspired by and relating to intercultural practices
  • crisis management in multicultural and multinational environments
  • practice theory as an approach to organizational and intercultural studies.

Skills

The student must attain

Skills in:

  • identifying cognitive, affective and environmental factors relevant to an intercultural encounter
  • performing an analysis of a crisis situation and assessing risk as well as possible solutions.

 

Competences

The student must attain

Competencies in:

  • intercultural relations and conflict management
  • problem solving within complex international and multicultural settings
  • reflective, experiential learning and intercultural competence development.

The examination is an individual exam portfolio; the content of the portfolio must demonstrate that the student has achieved the above-mentioned learning objectives and has participated actively in course activities.
The requirements for the contents of the portfolio will be determined by the course instructor at the start of the semester.

The assignment paper will be evaluated by the examiner.

Any re-examinations will be held in accordance with the above guidelines on the basis of a revised exam portfolio.
