Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

The purpose of Economic Methodology is to provide students with an understanding of how economics as a science requires various forms of methodological assessment. With such a pluralistic approach, it becomes necessary to evaluate economic research using different methodological criteria. Therefore, the module reviews various assumptions, techniques, and methods for argumentation and evaluation; for example, addressing different types of economic models and their relation to economic reality assessed within a methodological framework

Learning objectives

Knowledge

The aim is that after the module the student has knowledge of:

  • different scientific ideals and their approaches to economics.
  • comparison of different types of economic methodology.
  • The foundations of economic science, including identifying methodological differences between natural and social sciences.
  • orthodox and heterodox directions in economics.
  • different types of explanations in economics.

Skills

The aim is that after the module the student has skills to:

  • apply the scientific methods of the field.
  • justify the choice of relevant analytical models.
  • communicate complex academic issues and research-based knowledge from a philosophy of science perspective.
  • categorize the methodologies of different economic theories.
  • make choices and assessment of their own research design.

Competences

The aim is that after the module the student has the competencies in:

  • handle and reproduce acquired knowledge of the philosophy of economics.
  • identify their own learning needs and develop their own knowledge and skills.
  • initiate and carry out professional collaboration based on a philosophical-theoretical foundation.
