Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

The purpose of Macroeconomics IV is to give the students an introduction to advanced mainstream macro theory. The focus is particularly on cyclical movements and the role of monetary and fiscal policy in macro analyzes of how a long-term equilibrium is established. In addition to working theoretically, several of the theoretical conclusions will be investigated through the collection of data from digital databases, just as the model can be solved numerically through computer simulation. The module concludes with an introduction to monetary economics.

Learning objectives

Knowledge

The aim is that after the module the student has knowledge of:

  • the existence of business cycles and their consequences, including with a focus on the adaptation processes from the short to the long term.
  • the role of monetary and fiscal policy in a modern macroeconomic mainstream context.
  • how data can actually be broken down into a cyclical and trend component.

Skills

The aim is that after the module the student has skills to:

  • set up and use a formal macro model.
  • analyze and critically discuss the role of monetary and fiscal policy in a modern macroeconomic mainstream context.
  • use software to filter data.

Competences

The aim is that after the module the student has the competencies in:

  • demonstrate a basic understanding of essential aspects in the interaction between a number of important macro markets.
  • independently explain the findings of empirical studies based on the theory learned.
  • independently analyze the existence of business cycles and their consequences, with a focus on the adaptation processes from the short term to the long term.
