Sustainable Energy System Integration

2024/2025

Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

Learning objectives

Knowledge

  • Understand energy conversion technologies from a system perspective such as thermal, electrical, mechanical, biochemical and mechatronic interfaces
  • Understanding of fundamental energy transmission systems including the electricity grid, district heating, gas lines and their integration with energy production
  • Understand the interaction between energy systems and economic energy markets including ancillary services
  • Understanding fundamental thermal, electrical and mechanical energy storage technologies
  • Have knowledge about emerging energy technologies like Power to X (PtX), Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) and energy islands
  • Understand the electricification of the energy supply system

Skills

  • Apply the coupling of electrical, thermal, mechanical, biochemical and/or mechatronic energy systems
  • Evaluate fundamental energy transmission systems including all energy vectors in the present and future energy systems
  • Assess the financial viability of energy systems including energy storage in complex integrated energy systems
  • Design thermal, electrical, biochemical and/or mechanical energy storage technologies

Competences

  • Be able to understand and assess the possibilities of integration of complex sustainable energy systems today and understand the energy system transition in the future
  • Be able to evaluate complex sustainable energy systems technically and economically with respect to thermal, electrical, mechanical and/or biochemical aspects

Type of instruction

Lectures, exercises and workshops supplemented with interactive seminars on issues of current interest and importance.
