Design of Thermal Systems

2024/2025

Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

The module is based on knowledge achieved in the project module Control of energy conversion systems or similar.

Learning objectives

Knowledge

  • Have knowledge about mode of operation of thermal machines and systems
  • Have knowledge about methods for design of thermal energy systems
  • Have knowledge about interaction of components included in thermal machines and energy systems
  • Be able to comprehend scientific methods and theories compared to the semester theme and identify different problem types
  • Be able to set up an economic analysis for thermal machines and systems

Skills

  • Be able to develop and apply stationary models of thermal systems in full load and partial load using applicable digital tools
  • Have fundamental skills in design of optimal system configurations and determination of operation parameters for thermal systems
  • Be able to analyse achieved results from simulations combined with laboratory work or real measured data series, if any, using digital tools, and collect them to form an overall impression of the system performance
  • Be able to understand business principles and to make a cost-benefit analysis of the thermal machines or systems

Competences

  • Have achieved an ability to convert academic competences and skills of thermal systems for processing a practical problem, and be able to process such a problem and put this into perspective in relation to the surrounding society
  • Have achieved an ability to enter into a technical and interdisciplinary cooperation in respect to thermal systems
  • Be able to evaluate the basic economic conditions for the development and commissioning of systems or devices

Type of instruction

Problem based and project organised work in groups. Some lectures are given in business principles and cost-benefit analysis to support the objectives in this area.

The students are introducted to the entrepreneurship PBL Model from AAU.

They are introduced to models, tools and methods often used in entrepreneurial projects.

Extent and expected workload

Since it is a 15 ECTS project work, the work load is expected to be 450 hours for the student.
