Energy Systems of the Future

2024/2025

Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

Learning objectives

Knowledge

  • Have a basic knowledge about study techniques and work processes in a project work, knowledge acquisition and collaboration with the supervisor
  • Be able to define and understand the energy engineering terms used in the project work and have a fundamental comprehension for the applied methods, theories and/or models in energy engineering
  • Comprehend the design of energy systems and their models
  • Have knowledge about the academic profile of energy engineering at which the study aims

Skills

  • Be able to describe and analyse an energy engineering topic and explain this from one or more project angles
  • Be able to draw up solutions for simple energy engineering issues based on an idea generation process
  • Be able to communicate the project results in writing, graphically and orally in a coherent way
  • Be able to analyse own learning process
  • Be able to define the energy engineering and contextual terms used in a project report
  • Be able to prepare a problem analysis and a problem formulation and to perspective it in the context in which it is set up
  • Be able to describe the applied energy theories and methods to analyse the chosen problem in relevant contexts
  • Be able to create non-complicated models for the whole, or parts of, the selected energy system

Competences

  • Be able to identify energy engineering issues and reflect on them in the problem-oriented and project-organised study form
  • Be able to communicate the results achieved during the project work in a project report
  • Be able to plan and reflect on own experience with project work and problem-solving by applying relevant analysis methods
  • Be able to judge the project problem compared to sustainable development of energy systems
  • Be able to apply methods/theories during the project work in order to analyse an energy engineering problem
  • Be able to be part of a team, collaborate and manage conflicts and ensure motivation in the project work

Type of instruction

Project work including supervision, possibly supported by lectures, workshops, seminars, consultant meetings regarding PBL content, laboratory experiments, etc. The project may be discipline-oriented, interdisciplinary or part of a multidisciplinary project depending on project choice.

The project work is divided into two periods: P0 for problem formulation and P1 for problem solving. The P0 period lasts 5-6 weeks. The work in P0 includes a problem analysis and a problem formulation for the topic to be dealt with in the P1 part of the project. This must be written in a P0 document, which also contains a process analysis for the P0 period. The P0 document is presented at a status seminar as a part of the course in Problem Based Learning, where the project group documents (report and process analysis) are discussed.

Based on the problem analysis and problem formulation, students complete the P1 part of the project . The project work is documented in a P1 project report containing problem analysis, problem formulation, problem solution, analyses and results, as well as discussion and conclusion.

Extent and expected workload

Since it is a 15 ECTS project module, the work load is expected to be 450 hours for the student.

Exam

Prerequisite for enrollment for the exam

  • It is a precondition for participation in the exam that the student has submitted a P0 report and has participated in the P0 status and presentation seminar.
