Energy Conversion and Storage in Future Energy Systems

2024/2025

Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

Learning objectives

Knowledge

  • Have knowledge about the basic principles of electrochemical energy conversion
  • Have knowledge about the different types of electrolysers, fuel cells and battery energy storage technologies
  • Understand the operation/role of energy storage devices and their suitability for different applications (e.g., grid services, V2G, renewables’ grid integration etc.)
  • Have good knowledge about the performance (static and dynamic) behaviour of fuel cells, electrolysers and batteries and their dependence on the operating conditions (temperature, load current, etc.). Gain experience about different performance and thermal modelling approaches and model parameterization techniques
  • Gain knowledge about the testing of fuel cells, electrolysers and batteries in the laboratory

Skills

  • Be able to develop a simple model of an electrochemical cell or system using digital platforms
  • Be able to test an electrolyser or fuel cell or battery
  • Be able to evaluate the suitability of different energy storage technologies for various applications
  • Be able to derive various parameters from laboratory measurements

Competences

  • Be able to develop performance models for different battery technologies based on various requirements using digital platforms
  • Independently be able to identify the validity or limitations of an electrochemical model
  • Be able to analyse data from the fuel cell, electrolyser and battery tests

Type of instruction

The course will be planned and organised in close interaction with on‐going research and development activities at the Department of Energy and its collaborators. All lectures include exercises focusing on the presented material; some exercises will be performed using MATLAB and Simulink. Moreover, some exercises will be carried out on programmable battery test stations. Where it is found applicable also e-learning activities will be applied.

Extent and expected workload

Since it is a 5 ECTS course module, the work load is expected to be 150 hours for the student.
