Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Engineering within Mechanical Engineering or the like.

Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

Learning objectives


Through the specific module, participants achieve the following:

  • knowledge about fiber-reinforced composite materials, including their application, properties, and manufacturing.

Understanding of the following concepts and theories:

  • Manufacturing methods and their influence on the mechanical properties of composites.
  • Lamina and laminates: micromechanical models, modeling of laminates, classical laminate theory, first-order plate laminate theory.
  • Analysis of composite structures: plate and shell modeling using analytical models and commercial finite element programs. Including:
  • Thermal effects.
  • Failure and damage (static and fatigue).
  • Sandwich structures.
  • Adhesive joints and mechanical connections, load introduction aspects, 3D effects, and general design principles.


  • Apply concepts, theories, and methods for the analysis and design of composite materials and complex structures made of composite materials.
  • Evaluate structural analyses for complex structures made of composite materials.


  • Handle development and product design using composite materials.
  • Develop procedures for the analysis, design, and verification of components made of composite materials.
