Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

Learning objectives

Knowledge

  • Have knowledge about the structures of the principal biomaterials such as bone, muscle, cartilage, ligaments, connective tissues and biofluids.
  • Have knowledge about the mechanics and remodeling of living tissue.
  • Have knowledge about quality assurance and risk assessment procedures of medical devices.
  • Have knowledge about the liability and responsibility of medical devices manufacturers throughout the product lifecycle.

Skills

  • Be able to create valid models from experimental data and simulate the mechanical behaviors of living tissues using biomechanical simulation methods such as the finite element method.
  • Be able to create simple models of human body structures such as bones and ligaments.
  • Be able to classify medical devices according to current regulations.
  • Be able to apply clinical assessments to document the performance and safety of medical devices according to the specific classification.

Competences

  • Be able to combine insights from solid mechanics with the structure of biomaterials to draw informed conclusions about the behavior of living tissue.
  • Be able to envision medical devices for specific purposes that can fulfill regulatory requirements.
