Learning objectives

Knowledge

  • Have knowledge of the principles of hypothesis-driven research. 
  • Have knowledge of different types of experimental designs and their ethical considerations. 
  • Have knowledge about the scientific quality criteria such as internal and external validity, reliability, causality, generalizability and different types of bias. 
  • Have knowledge of inclusion and exclusion criteria.
  • Have knowledge of methods to test data for normality. 
  • Have knowledge of methods for parametric and non-parametric statistical tests. 
  • Have knowledge of methods for visualizing discrete and continuous statistical outcomes. 
  • Have knowledge of methods to estimate sample size.   

Skills

  • Be able to write an experimental protocol, including selection of the experimental design, sample size consideration and inclusion/exclusion criteria.
  • Be able to select and apply the appropriate statistical method for a specific hypothesis.
  • Be able to generate visualizations of discrete and continuous statistical outcomes.
  • Be able to apply dedicated statistical data analysis software. 

Competences

  • Be able to reflect on the strength and weaknesses of a specific experimental protocol.  
  • Be able to reflect on the applied statistical methods and generate a conclusion. 
  • Be able to critically review the conclusions drawn based on an experimental protocol and statistical methods.

Extent and expected workload

Since it is a 5 ECTS course module the expected workload is 150 hours for the student.
