Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

This module gives knowledge of theories and methods for creating art-based, visual communicative, digital and cultural expertise. The students are taught problem-based, art based and art pedagogical approaches to research and theory generating practice. The module comprises local based and site-specific activities connected to art and problem-based research methodology. First part of the module is taking place as a five-days mandatory symposium on one campus.

Learning objectives

Knowledge

Through the module, the student must gain knowledge and understanding of:

  • Visual communicative, digital and cultural paradigms, methodologies and art-based methods
  • Relation between scientific philosophy, scientific and art-based methods and theory in transdisciplinary settings
  • Problem-based, art-based, art pedagogical approaches to research and theory generating practices

Skills

The student must through the module acquire skills in:

  • Seeking, analysing, and discussing advanced research literature in art education, digital visual communication, and arts-based research
  • Applying theories and concepts from advanced research literature and practice in independent research projects
  • Evaluating and reflecting the implications from using diverse methodical, artistic and theoretical approaches and concepts

Competences

The student must through the module acquire competences for:

  • Independently to perform creative problem setting, rethink, plan and conduct and problem-solving in specific contexts of practice  
  • Reflect on the basis for combining creative and scientific approaches for investigating visual communicative and art educational issues
  • Recognizing novel contexts for transdisciplinary, creative problem-solving

Type of instruction

Furthermore, the students are taught in collaborating online, offline and hybrid learning environment. The first part of the module takes place as a mandatory five-days symposia on a campus.

Reexamination:
An internal written examination in Art and Problem-Based Research Methodology.
The examination is a seven-day take-home assignment on a set topic. Evaluation: pass/fail.
The assignment paper must demonstrate that the student fulfils the objectives for the module stated above.
