The course will introduce the student to a new way of considering what is important for communication and digital media studies.
Traditionally, close analyses of interaction and texts have been undertaken as constitutive or part of a larger political and societal entities. However, one of the basic features of human existence, being mobile, has not been of central theoretical or analytical concern when studying ways of communicating - with or without digital media.
In the course, Mobility Studies is introduced, not just as a field, but as a new research paradigm (Mobilities).
The course offers a closer look at different types of embodied human mobility (e.g. walking and driving), relate mobility to (work) places, and discuss forced mobility due to political, societal and environmental reasons.
Each of these themes are introduced with an approach from Discourse and Practice Studies, so every course day consists of lectures and analytical tasks.
Through the module, the student must gain knowledge and understanding of:
theories and methods specifically relevant for mobilitet/mobility
research questions and challenges around mobilitet/mobility
theories and methods about the relationship between mobility, space and embodiment
theories and methods about how communication, social practices and technologies have an impact on mobility and are in turn effected by it
The student must through the module acquire skills in:
to master research methods and tools to study mobility
to be able to evaluate and choose between research theories, methods, tools and on the basis of this discuss which types of analysis and/or solutions would be feasible for mobility
to be able to initiate, manage, accomplish mobility studies to evaluate the impact of different types of mobility on practices in different settings (e.g. work, family, everyday life)
to be able to evaluate the impact of globalization on mobility
The student must through the module acquire competences for:
independent use of theoretical and methodological knowledge to understand and solve challenges caused by mobility
to act and guide others as a member of (civil) society in situations where practices depend on mobility
