Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

The aim of the course is for students to gain experience and understanding of the process of statistical consulting. Major emphases of the course will be on relating to the client and understanding their problem, communicating the results of your analysis to the client in both written and verbal form, and on carrying out your analysis of the data from the client’s problem and presenting statistical results.

Learning objectives

Knowledge

  • has knowledge about simple principles for the design of experiments

  • is able to make reproducible reports (e.g. in Rmarkdown)

  • can make self-contained documents including tables and figures

  • can explain the chosen model including its limitations and strengths

  • knows about ethical concerns related to data analysis

  • has insight into different types of graphics and their potentials

Skills

  • can apply the relevant methodologies in relation to the discussions between the client and consultant

  • are able state the underlying assumptions and argue about limitations and extensibility of the chosen methodologies

  • can communicate the findings clearly both verbally and in writing

Competences

  • can use graphics to visualise the findings and support conclusions

  • can combine appropriate topics from the course to analyse a specific problem

  • can in writing describe the methodologies, results and outcome from an analysis of a specific problem

Type of instruction

 

The module will based on few lectures and short class discussions. The students will discuss and present materials handed out by the instructor. The students will present their progress on class and get feedback on their final report.

Extent and expected workload

5 ECTS equivalent to a workload of 150 hours.
