Communication Systems

2024/2025

Recommended prerequisite for participation in the module

The module builds on knowledge of digital communication, networking protocols and stochastic processes

Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

The focus is on wireless communication systems. Students must obtain an understanding of wireless communication systems and how information is transmitted between different entities in such systems. This includes a block level understanding of a full communication system, a deeper understanding of selected entities incl. their performance modelling/characteristics, basic models for wireless propagation as applicable to different network types and applications, how wireless channels impact to link and system performance, and the principles for sharing radio resources in such systems. The aim is that this insight, referenced to an information theoretic context and based on appropriate models, enable students to study specific implementations of communication systems and quantify their performance.

Learning objectives

Knowledge

  • Characteristics of wireless communication channels, such as applicable to industrial, terrestrial, on-body and space communication channels
  • The use of time, frequency and space for resource allocation over shared wireless medium
  • Communication system performance, metrics and limits, including fundamental information theoretic measures

Skills

  • Be able to establish a communication model for wireless transmission, including main propagation and communication models
  • Be able to choose performance metrics for the characterization of communication system performance at link and/or system level
  • Be able to simulate and characterize a communication system involving several entities communicating over a shared wireless medium

Competences

  • Use relevant abstractions and models to model the constituent parts of a wireless communication system and quantify the performance of different communication system blocks on a link and/or system level
