The module is based on knowledge achieved in the modules Mechanics or Fundamental Statics and Strength of Materials or similar.

Learning objectives

Knowledge

  • Have knowledge about how offshore surroundings and other processes affect the properties of materials
  • Have knowledge and understanding within loads from waves, currents and wind
  • Have knowledge and understanding within digital modelling of loads from waves, currents and wind
  • Have understanding of various types of actuation, including electrical and hydraulic actuation systems
  • Have understanding of the digital modelling, and its necessity, of hydraulic systems
  • Have understanding of methods and choices of hydraulic actuators, sensors, technologies and interfacing between technologies

Skills

  • Be able to calculate design loads due to waves, currents and wind compared to existing standards
  • Be able to calculate forces on subjects exposed to wave, power and wind loads
  • Be able to model and analyse hydraulic systems via digital platforms
  • Be able to assess the suitability of different technologies for a given application
  • Be able to apply ideas, principles and methods for selecting and interfacing sensors and actuators

Competences

  • Be able to handle developments in connection with offshore technology and hydraulic systems
  • Participate independently in professional and interdisciplinary cooperation with a professional approach in offshore engineering and hydraulics
  • Identify own learning needs and structure own learning in offshore engineering and hydraulics

Type of instruction

Lectures with subsequent assignment calculations and laboratory work; possibly supplemented with self-study/study groups and e-learning activities.

Extent and expected workload

Since it is a 5 ECTS course, the work load is expected to be 150 hours for the student.
