Offshore Technology and Hydraulics

Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

The module is based on knowledge achieved in the modules Mechanics or Fundamental Statics and Strength of Materials or similar.

Learning objectives

  • Have knowledge about how offshore surroundings and other processes affect the properties of materials
  • Have knowledge and understanding within loads from waves, currents and wind
  • Have knowledge and understanding within digital modelling of loads from waves, currents and wind
  • Have understanding of various types of actuation, including electrical and hydraulic actuation systems
  • Have understanding of the digital modelling, and its necessity, of hydraulic systems
  • Have understanding of methods and choices of hydraulic actuators, sensors, technologies and interfacing between technologies

  • Be able to calculate design loads due to waves, currents and wind compared to existing standards
  • Be able to calculate forces on subjects exposed to wave, power and wind loads
  • Be able to model and analyse hydraulic systems via digital platforms
  • Be able to assess the suitability of different technologies for a given application
  • Be able to apply ideas, principles and methods for selecting and interfacing sensors and actuators

  • Be able to handle developments in connection with offshore technology and hydraulic systems
  • Participate independently in professional and interdisciplinary cooperation with a professional approach in offshore engineering and hydraulics
  • Identify own learning needs and structure own learning in offshore engineering and hydraulics
