Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer and Fluid Dynamics

2024/2025

Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

The module is based on knowledge achieved in the module Introduction to mechanics and thermodynamics or similar.

Learning objectives

Knowledge

  • Have knowledge about engineering thermodynamics, fundamental heat transfer and fluid flow
  • Have knowledge of thermodynamic cycles and psychrometric processes for moist air
  • Have knowledge of internal and external flows, pumps, and pipe components
  • Have knowledge of thermal conduction, forced convection, and components for heat transfer

Skills

  • Be able to perform fundamental calculations for thermodynamic cycles including Rankine and vapor compression refrigeration cycles
  • Be able to use a psychrometric chart and perform calculations for air-condition systems
  • Be able to calculate pressure loss in internal flows and apply the energy equation on flows in pipe systems with various components
  • Be able to size a pump to a fluid flow system
  • Be able to perform basic calculations on lift and drag as well as hydrostatics
  • Be able to set up thermal resistance networks and calculate overall and convective heat transfer on internal and external flows
  • Be able to size heat exchangers including using the LMTD and Effectiveness-NTU methods

Competences

  • Be able to use theories and methods from thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics to analyse systems and select components for heat pumps, thermal power plants, air condition, pipe systems, cooling systems etc.

  • Be able to reason and argument with terminology from thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics
  • Be able to apply the subject area in interdisciplinary collaboration with other subject areas to solve practical problems in engineering applications
