Interaction Design 4: Interactive Physical Design

Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

This is an English translation of the module. In case of discrepancy between the translation and the Danish version, the Danish version of the module is valid.

The module aims to provide knowledge and competencies regarding interactive physical products and technologies, including how physical elements can be integrated, designed and used in interactive technologies. The module introduces and integrates knowledge of physical, mechanical or active components, sensors, simple control and interface design. Through the design and study of physical designs and user interfaces on various products, as well as functionality and design of physical interactive elements, an understanding of principles and solution types is sought. The module can contain various forms of physical design, such as shape-changing interfaces or moving technologies such as robots.

Learning objectives

  • must have knowledge of the basic characteristics of physical interactive products
  • must have knowledge of commonly used components in connection with mechanical and movable design

  • must be able to design and put together an interactive product based on basic physical design components for a solution proposal
  • must be able to describe the physical interactive design with concepts and subject terminology

  • must be able to analyze and implement moving components, associated controls and interfaces for a product
  • must be able to reflect on the use and application of physical design elements in interactive products
