Mathematics for Ecconomists I

2024/2025

Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

The objective of the module is to provide the student with the mathematical prerequisite to participate in the modules on both the bachelor and master’s programme in economics, when it comes to linear Algebra: matrix algebra, inverse matrix, and methods to solve systems of linear equations, linear dependence, rank, eigen values, diagonalising and square forms.

Learning objectives

Knowledge

The objective is that the student after the module possesses the necessary knowledge on:

  • demonstrating insight in standard mathematical terminology.
  • accounting for the application of matrix calculation in economic problems.
  • exemplifying the interaction between math and economic models.

Skills

The objective is that the student after the module possesses the necessary skills in:

  • applying matrix algebra, inverse matrix, and methods to solve systems of linear equations, including accounting for linear dependence both in practice and in theory. Furthermore, the student must be able to apply and explain the terms rank and eigen values of a matrix and diagonalising and square forms.
  • implementing fundamental matrix algebra calculations using relevant computer programs.
  • formulating and analysing fundamental economic models based on the knowledge and skills mentioned above.

Competences

The objective is that the student after the module possesses the necessary competences in:

  • identifying, analysing, and interpreting methods to solve fundamental economic models based on the knowledge and skills mentioned above.
  • arguing for each step in the problem solving on a mathematical basis and assessing if obtained results are correct.
  • showing a fundamental knowledge of mathematical methodology and theory.
