Learning objectives

Knowledge

The student must attain

Knowledge and understanding of:

  • significant varieties of intercultural interaction occuring in globalization processes such as communication within and between institutions and organizations, in intergovernmental cooperation, in international development, aid work and through digtal media
  • relevant identity-related factors and their influence on intercultural communication, including ethnicity, language, and religion
  • theories of intercultural communication
  • significant methodological approaches to analyzing international and intercultural communication.

Skills

The student must attain

Skills in:

  • analytical understanding of concrete examples of intercultural communication
  • analyzing intercultural communication situations and their contexts in multiple forms, from the interpersonal to the institutional and organizational to the international and digital
  • identifying and explaining central dimensions of intercultural conflict.

Competences

The student must attain

Competencies in:

  • critically discussing types of interpersonal, intergovernmental or interaction in relation to intercultural communication
  • explaining the effect of multiple approaches to the field of intercultural communication on the understanding of communication between institutions, and individuals with different national, ethnic and/or cultural backgrounds.

The examination is an individual exam portfolio; the content of the portfolio must demonstrate that the student has achieved the above-mentioned learning objectives that the student has achieved the above-mentioned learning objectives and has participated actively in course activities. The requirements for the contents of the portfolio will be determined by the course instructor at the start of the semester.

The assignment paper will be evaluated by the examiner.

Any re-examinations will be held in held in accordance with the above guidelines on the basis of a revised exam portfolio.
