Mathematics for Ecconomists II

2024/2025

Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

The objective of the module is to provide the student with the mathematical prerequisite to participate in the modules on both the bachelor and master’s programme in economics, in terms of calculus: exponential and logarithmic functions, discrete and continuous growth, functions with more than one argument and optimising these with and without constraints, definite and indefinite integrals, difference and differential equations.

The module is based on the knowledge, skills and competencies achieved in the module Mathematics I.

Learning objectives

Knowledge

The objective is that the student after the module possesses the necessary knowledge on:

  • explaining standard mathematical terminology.
  • accounting for functions with more than one variable, including differentiation of such functions.
  • accounting for definite and indefinite integrals, and obtaining knowledge about multiple integrals and variable shifts.
  • accounting for constrained and unconstrained optimisation of functions
  • obtaining knowledge about gradients, Jacobian and Hessian matrices.
  • exemplifying the interaction between math and economic models.

Skills

The objective is that the student after the module possesses the necessary skills in:

  • applying rules of arithmetic including differentiation of exponential and logarithmic functions, and economic applications in connection with accrued interest and discounting.
  • applying theory for optimising constrained or unconstrained functions with Two or more variables in practice.
  • being able to differentiate or integrate examples of function’s expression in practice.
  • applying methods to solve differential and difference equations.
  • formulating and analysing fundamental economic models based on the knowledge and skills mentioned above.

Competences

The objective is that the student after the module possesses the necessary competences in:

  • identifying, analysing, and interpreting methods to solve fundamental economic models.
  • arguing for each step in the problem solving on a mathematical basis and assessing if obtained results are correct.
  • showing a fundamental knowledge of mathematic methodology and theory.
