Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

The module is based on knowledge achieved in the modules Introduction to electrical engineering and AC circuit theory or similar.

Learning objectives


  • Have knowledge about theories applied to gain an efficient energy conversion using power electronic systems and apparatus
  • Have knowledge about function and operation of power electronic components
  • Have knowledge about and understanding of how power electronic systems, appliances and components are modelled
  • Have knowledge about digital modelling tools


  • Be able to apply knowledge about energy efficient power electronic systems, apparatus and their components for simulation via digital tools
  • Be able to evaluate the result of the modelling and to which extent it is representative for the physical world
  • Be able to relate to digital models at different levels of abstraction and their applications


  • Be able to apply academic knowledge and skills in the digital analysis of efficient power electronic systems, apparatus and their components to a practical problem and to process such a problem
  • Be able to engage in disciplinary and interdisciplinary cooperation within power electronic systems

The programme is based on a combination of academic, problem oriented and interdisciplinary approaches and organised based on the following types of instruction that combine skills and re-flection:

  • exercises (individually and in groups)
  • teacher feedback
  • professional reflection
  • portfolio work
  • laboratory work
  • possibly E-learning via digital platforms


Extent and expected workload

Since it is a 5 ECTS course, the work load is expected to be 150 hours for the student.
