Management and Leadership

2023/2024

Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

The module explores how management can be understood theoretically from different perspectives and how it is practiced in an organisational context. Through the module, students are introduced to different and relevant approaches to management. The roots of these approaches and their evolution over time are explored. Perspectives that address how, in different ways, leadership involves mastering the interplay between managing processes, people and oneself.

During the module, the student is introduced to the basic ideas behind different management perspectives. How these basic ideas have developed is discussed and through concrete practical cases, the student learns how the management perspectives are applied in organisations and companies.

In doing so, the student will not only acquire knowledge, skills and competences in the theoretical approaches to management, the student will also learn how management is often a complex practice, where the ability to critically and reflectively engage with management theories and adapt them to an increasingly changing and complex context and available resources becomes central to the concept and practice of management.
