Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

This module comprises teaching of philosophy of science and methodology with a main emphasis on philosophy of science and methods related to international and intercultural issues, within the humanistic and social sciences. In addition, a workshop series on problem based learning and hands-on project writing skills will be included. 

Learning objectives

Knowledge

  • central aspects of philosophy of science and methods related to international and intercultural processes
  • relations of different methods to paradigms of philosophy of science including those focusing on the study of digital environments.

Skills

  • assessment and choice of quantitative and qualitative methods, including methods of text and discourse analysis
  • argumentation and communication of methodological choices related to the analysis of face-to-face and digital contexts and interaction
  • critically reflecting on requirements regarding data validity, ethics and data protection in relation to diverse settings, including those mediated and produced digitally.

Competences

  • assessing alignment between problem identification and methodological choices
  • independently, and on the basis of critical methodological considerations, designing optimal research strategies in relation to relevant issues within culture, communication and global studies.

Active participation/continuous evaluation
An internal examination in: Philosophy of Science and Methodology. The examination is completed by satisfactory and active participation in the module, including lectures and PBL workshop, i.e. a minimum of 80% attendance, contribution to discussion sessions of the module through oral presentation and active participation and completion of set tasks, which will be part of a portfolio.

Re-examination is a 2-day take-home assignment given by the examiner on the basis of the curriculum for the module in Philosophy of Science and Methodology. The assignment paper must not exceed 10 pages. The assignment paper will be evaluated by an internal examiner.
