Instrumentation and regulation of processes

2023/2024

Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

The course will introduce the students to process design, including instrumentation and economics, as well as process regulation.

Learning objectives

Knowledge

Students who complete the course must be able to

  • explain process design
  • explain instrumentation
  • explain process regulation
  • explain PID design and tuning

Skills

  • represent systems in block diagrams
  • set up the necessary differential equations to simulate the dynamics of a system and use them to predict the system's response to impact
  • linearize a nonlinear system of differential equations
  • solve linear differential equations via Laplace transformation
  • specify the relevant control constants for a simple control system
  • design and dimension processes, including the selection of relevant instruments (pumps, valves, pipes) taking into account the chemical and physical resistance of the instruments
  • draw up PI and PI&D diagrams for processes
  • perform basic process design and process economic calculations
