Dilemmas in Cyber Security

Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

The operational praxis of cyber security confronts the engineer with different dilemmas where e.g., the value of a cyber security operation must be balanced with the harm it may produce, or where a cyber security operation may risk violate legislation or other principles. In order to articulate these dilemmas, the course in “Dilemmas in Cyber Security” examines cases and generic problems in operational cyber security from both a practical and theoretical point of view.

Learning objectives

Knowledge

Must have:

  • Understanding of the ethical and legal contexts of a cyber security application or cyber security praxis
  • Understanding of values that form basis for, and define cyber security solutions
  • Knowledge of methods for formulation of an ethical dilemma in cyber security
  • Knowledge of methods for evaluation of an ethical dilemma in cyber security

Skills

Must have the skills to:

  • recognise an operational dilemma within cyber security
  • formulate the dilemma seen from different points of view
  • discuss an ethical dilemma in cyber security

Competences

Must have the competences to:

  • suggest a reasonable solution for an operational dilemma
  • evaluate different solutions for a cyber security dilemma
