Learning objectives

Knowledge

The student must attain

Knowledge and understanding of:

  • relevant discourse analytical methods for understanding relations between language use and social and political phenomena
  • theories of language and language use vis-à-vis social and political power and communications.

Skills

The student must attain

Skills in:

  • analyzing and understanding spoken and written communication in social and political context as well as in organizations and the media
  • analyzing and understanding the social and cultural varieties of the English language.

Competences

The student must attain

Competencies in:

  • working with relevant theories and methods for analyzing issues pertaining to language, politics and society
  • communicating about issues in discourse studies in a clear written English.

The examination is an individual exam portfolio; the content of the portfolio must demonstrate that the student has achieved the above-mentioned learning objectives that the student has achieved the above-mentioned learning objectives and has participated actively in course activities. The requirements for the contents of the portfolio will be determined by the course instructor at the start of the semester.

The portfolio will be evaluated by the examiner.

Any re-examinations will be held in accordance with the above guidelines on the basis of a revised exam portfolio.
