Advanced Control

2022/2023

Recommended prerequisite for participation in the module

The module builds on knowledge of linear algebra and software tools such as Matlab, Python or equivalent; basic knowledge in the control of SISO systems and MIMO state space control

Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

The purpose of this course is to give the student advanced competences within the realm of control system theory. The course will cover various aspects within linear system theory and nonlinear systems as well as control of large scale systems. Students who complete the course will be able to formulate and solve advanced control problems.

Learning objectives

Knowledge

The student should have knowledge about:

  • MIMO state space control, including controllability, stabilizability and observability.
  • Observer design, including Kalman filter
  • Uncertainty and robustness for MIMO systems
  • Software tools to solve constrained control problems
  • Nonlinear or optimal control

Skills

  • Should be able to formulate and solve the tracking problem and stabilization by dynamic measurement feedback
  • Should be able to formulate and solve control problems with constraints and disturbances
  • Should be able to structure and design control systems for large scale systems with coupling between control loops

Competences

  • Capable of understand the implications of constraints, disturbances and uncertainties in the context of linear systems, and be able to address these via robust control design
  • Capable of applying control synthesis for mechanical, electromechanical or energy conversion systems.
