Sensors and Systems

2022/2023

Prerequisite/Recommended prerequisite for participation in the module

Students are recommended to have knowledge about probability and stochastic processes/systems; knowledge about optimization and fundamental concepts in machine learning.

Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

Sensors are essential to data collection and thus an essential part of virtually any electronic system. As a consequence, they are also becoming small and cheap, and with the ongoing rapid introduction of ubiquitous wireless networking technologies, advanced sensors are quickly becoming a cornerstone of embedded systems to facilitate Internet-of-Things. The purpose of this course is to give the student insight to sensor operation, data representation and processing, and implementation in embedded systems.

Learning objectives

Knowledge

  • Advanced sensors for selected application domains, e.g. biological, medical, environmental or industrial measurement contexts
  • Representation of signals for embedded systems and fusing of signals from non-homogeneous sources
  • Signal processing for sensor signals, e.g. nonlinear filtering methods such as extended Kalman filter, unscented Kalman filter, particle filter and machine learning
  • Performance metrics of sensor systems, such as power efficiency, reliability, computing efficiency

Skills

  • Should be able to represent sensor signals and apply sensor signal processing for implementation in embedded systems
  • Should be able to apply algorithm and computational analysis to the implemented sensor system in order to meet required accuracy and resource constraints
  • Can analyze systems with multiple sensors and apply techniques to extract relevant information

Competences

  • Capable of designing sensor system HW/SW according to defined requirements, including signal representation and processing as applicable to embedded systems
