Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

Objectives:

To provide students with theoretical and factual knowledge about developments within the field of EU policies (including foreign policy) and economy, as well as socio-political processes that influence European integration.

Content:

The module examines important processes in EU policies and the European economy. The students will be introduced to internal dimensions of the EU (such as the economic system, different policy areas and civil society relations with European institutions), to the external dimensions (i.e., decision-making procedures, actors and institutions of EU’s foreign policy) as well as to the social dimension of EU politics and policies. Various theoretical approaches will be presented in those realms, for instance key notions of European democracy.

Learning objectives

Knowledge

  • possess knowledge and understanding of theories, themes and practices within the field of EU policies and European economy and can reflect on these on a scientific basis
  • possess knowledge and understanding of theories, themes and practices within the field of the foreign policy of the EU and are able to reflect on these on a scientific basis
  • possess knowledge and understanding of theories, themes and practices regarding socio-political relations in the context of the European Union and can reflect on these on a scientific basis.

Skills

  • can use their knowledge within the module’s subject areas to select theories that serve the analytical purpose, and at the same time remain critical to these theories.

Competences

  • can reflect and argue on the basis of scientific knowledge.
  • are able to critically apply theory to empirical data in order to analyze and explain developments within the module’s subject area.
  • are able to independently take responsibility for their own further academic development.

European Policies, Economics and Society is evaluated at an internally assessed individual written examination. The examination is a 72-hour take-home assignment comprising issues within the subject area of the module. The assignment paper must not exceed eight pages.
