Objectives

The objectives of the module are

  • To provide students with an overview of the critical issues facing Latin America today
  • To understand the complex character of the society-environment nexus
  • To offer an insight into contemporary social movements and civil society organisations in Latin America
  • To engage and apply a range of selected theoretical perspectives to concrete cases and issues

Content

The module includes themes within:

  • Latin American cultures and societies 
  • Natural resources and the environment in Latin America
  • Social movements and civil society in modern Latin America

The module will form the basis of further theoretical and practical work within the field in the project module of the semester.

  • Possess basic knowledge and understanding of contemporary themes and issues facing Latin American and the various approaches to the study of these

  • Have the ability to apply theories and understanding to concrete empirical cases and issues in Latin America
  • Ability to engage and apply a range of selected theoretical perspectives to concrete cases and issues in Latin America

Competences

  • Can reflect and analyse contemporary Latin American issues from a practical and theoretical perspective

The examination for Social Movements and Civil Society in Modern Latin America is an internally assessed individual written examination. The examination consists of a 48-hour take-home assignment comprising of two questions based on issues covered within the subject area of Social Movements and Civil Society in Modern Latin America. The assignment paper must not exceed six pages.
