Equity Modes of Internationalisation

Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

The aim of the module is to give the student an insight into high commitment modes of internationalisation that include equity ownership in the form of minority or majority stakes in International Joint Ventures (IJVs), Mergers and Acquisitions (M&As) and Wholly-Owned Subsidiaries (WOS) resulting from greenfield or brownfield investment.

The student will explore managerial decisions on resource commitment, flexibility, shifts in the mode of foreign market servicing and the influence of context on the combinations of modes of internationalisation will be explored. Furthermore, cooperative strategies and relationship challenges involved in these internationalisation modes will be discussed.

Learning objectives

Knowledge

The objective is that the student after the module possesses the necessary knowledge on:

  • theories explaining the choice of equity modes in internationalisation and used in analysing the specifics of each equity mode.
  • managerial decisions on resource commitment, flexibility, and shifts in equity modes of internationalisation.
  • the impact of home and host country context and institutions on the choice of equity modes of internationalisation and firm performance.

Skills

The objective is that the student after the module possesses the necessary skills in:

  • searching for, grouping and extracting key points from academic publications on equity modes of internationalisation.
  • reading and synthesising international business based academic articles and books on equity modes.
  • comparing, contrasting and critically evaluating the relevance of different equity modes in context.

Competences

The objective is that the student after the module possesses the necessary competences in:

  • identifying and analysing key theoretical and practical problems concerning equity modes of internationalisation.
  • applying the above knowledge and skills to case companies.
  • relating contemporary changes in the political environment to the strategic choice of equity modes of internationalisation.
