Learning objectives

Knowledge

Students who have passed the module should be able to

  • explain basic process engineering concepts, including systems, system boundaries, process types, process units and process variables
  • explain the concepts energy, energy transfer and power
  • explain the system of preparation and calculation of balance equations
  • explain the main theorems of thermodynamics
  • explain ideal gases
  • explain heat, work and internal energy
  • explain thermodynamic material properties
  • explain the Boltzmann distribution
  • explain entropy
  • explain enthalpy and be able to define standard enthalpy changes in physical processes and chemical reactions
  • explain Gibbs free energy, phase equilibria for pure substances and phase diagrams
  • explain chemical potential and thermodynamic equilibrium for chemical reactions

Skills

  • read process diagrams
  • make a relevant demarcation and / or breakdown of a given technical, chemical or biological process and draw block and process diagrams
  • convert between units
  • establish and resolve mass balances for stationary non-reactive systems and reactive systems
  • count on ideal gases and ideal gas mixtures
  • estimate the compressibility factor of a real gas under given process conditions
  • use phase diagrams and vapour tables
  • carry out thermochemical calculations
  • calculate equilibrium ratios based on thermodynamic data
  • establish and resolve energy balances

Competences

  • apply thermodynamic theory and process engineering methods to understand, describe and solve problems in subject areas such as analytical chemistry, materials science, separation technology, chemical reaction technique and process design
