NMR and MS

2021/2022

Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

Learning objectives

Knowledge

Students who complete the module should be able to

  • explain the theoretical foundations of NMR and MS, including how the observed signals occur
  • explain different types of NMR and MS experiments and the information they each provide
  • explain the experimental method for measuring NMR and MS data

Skills

  • work with NMR data, including processing and presentation of 1D and 2D NMR spectra
  • interpret 1D and 2D NMR spectra which means to be able to predict a spectrum from a given molecular structure, find an unknown molecular structure based on a given spectrum, be able to assign NMR signals to atoms within a molecule and conduct quantitative calculations based on NMR data
  • interpret MALDI MS, EI MS and ESI MS spectra
  • use correct concept, nomenclature, and symbols from the NMR and MS literature

Competences

  • evaluate applications for NMR and MS for chemical, biotechnological and nanotechnological problems
  • present chemical, biotechnological and nanotechnological results based on NMR and MS data
