Scientific Challenges in Finance

Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

The module offers the student the possibility to explore academic challenges within finance. During the module the student will learn how to plan, manage and conduct a research project where a financial research topic are explored in a higher level. The purpose is to potentially send a paper to an academic journal.

During the module the student will – with the support of an advisor – be able to apply relevant scientific theories, models, and methods on empirical and/or theoretical within a specific subject area. Furthermore, be able to analyse, discuss and present central findings to a scientific community.

Learning objectives

Knowledge

The objective is that the student after the module possesses the necessary knowledge on:

  • planning, managing, and conducting a research project with the purpose of potentially sending the paper to a journal.
  • of a specific research topic within finance at a higher level and the particular scientific problems within the subject area.
  • new ways to explore a specific finance-related problem as well as the limitations from the demarcation in terms of theories and/or methods.

Skills

The objective is that the student after the module possesses the necessary skills in:

  • choosing between, demarcating between, and applying relevant scientific theories, models, and methods on empirical and/or theoretical within a specific subject area.
  • analysing, explaining, and exemplifying central aspects within the theories, models, and methods that are relevant for the problem(s) in the research project.
  • formulating a written as well as oral presentation of the problem(s), relevant methods, analyses, and conclusions of the research paper in a scientifically clear, concise, and precise language.

Competences

The objective is that the student after the module possesses the necessary competences in:

  • independent management and conduct of a research process in close collaboration with the research group with the purpose of writing a publishable research paper.
  • discussing and presenting arguments of selected problems and solutions in academic writings and oral presentations directed towards researchers.
  • applying theories, data, and methods from the literature and to build a critical understanding of the problems and proposed solution within a specific finance-related problem.
