Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

Objectives

For students to gain an understanding of current issues in political, economic and social development. To provide students with the ability to understand and apply relevant theoretical perspectives to real-life issues in international development.

 

Contents

Emphasis will be on

  • understanding the evolution of development theories
  • understanding the main issues and dynamics of development as well as selected theoretical perspectives on development
  • understanding selected development strategies and how these strategies relate to concrete examples of country-specific development patterns
  • applying development theories to concrete real-life issues and cases

Learning objectives

Knowledge

  • possess knowledge and a critical understanding of political, economic and social processes of change at various levels of analysis
  • possess knowledge of relevant theories within international development studies as well as various development strategies in this context.

Skills

  • possess a comprehensive and critical understanding of development processes and strategies
  • have the ability to apply development theories to concrete empirical cases and issues

Competences

  • can reflect upon and analyse international development processes from a practical and theoretical perspective

Type of instruction

The module consists of lectures and exercises. Students will be given assignments in relation to lectures.
