Content, progress and pedagogy of the module

Objectives

The objective of this module is:

• To provide students with an understanding of the main issues and dynamics of contemporary political and social issues in Latin America
• To enable students to understand the tensions generated by development policies in the region and to understand the multi-faceted challenges to contemporary citizenship
• To allow students to engage with and apply a range of selected theoretical perspectives to concrete cases and issues

Content

The module includes themes within:

• Political changes and new challenges for Latin America
• Contemporary Latin American development challenges
• The politics of human rights in Latin America

The module will form the basis of further theoretical and practical work within the field in the project module of the semester.

• Possess basic knowledge and understanding of contemporary political, social and development issues in Latin America and the various approaches to the study of these

• Have the ability to apply theories and understanding to concrete empirical cases and issues in Latin America

• Can reflect on and analyse contemporary Latin American issues from a practical and theoretical perspective

Type of instruction

The module consists of lectures and seminars, possibly with exercises and student contributions.
