The module explores key issues in international business and firm internationalisation by addressing their complexities. The course covers key theories of trade and investment and provides a directed path through centuries of thought on why and how trade and investment occurs across borders. More specifically, it explores:
the nature of globalisation and its consequences for developed, emerging and developing economies;
the process and approach to undertaking foreign direct investment;
key theories and frameworks used in analysing foreign direct investment;
the role of the environment and institutions in outward and inward foreign direct investment;
international business strategy;
the political divisiveness that affects trade and foreign direct investment issues.
The student must through the module obtain knowledge about:
Understanding key concepts in international business.
Knowledge about the nature and complexities of international business
Understanding of the importance of context, institutions, political and legal environment
Knowledge of key international business theories.
Competencies to understand and critically evaluate internationalisation opportunities for firms and firm’s abilities to implement specific internationalisation market entry modes.
The student must through the module obtain skills in:
Students must be able to identify specific international business challenges that companies face.
Students must be able to analyse the internationalisation process of a firm in view of the conceptual and theoretical knowledge as well as considering the specifics of the company.
The student must through the module obtain competencies in:
Students should be able to assess the options that companies have for their internationalisation.
Students should be able to conduct effective problem solving in relation to company internationalisation.
